3-Way Caravan Fridge Error – What It Means and How to Fix It

There’s nothing like pulling up at your campsite, ready to kick back and relax, only to find your caravan fridge flashing an error code when you try to run it on gas. Frustrating, right?

At our workshop, we often get calls about this exact issue. The good news? Most of the time, it’s quick and easy to fix yourself. In this blog, we’ll walk you through why this error happens, how to reset your fridge, and when it’s time to call in the experts.

Why Does the Fridge Error Happen?

Your 3-way caravan fridge (like most Dometic or Thetford models) relies on gas when you’re free camping. If there’s air in the gas line, or the system hasn’t had a chance to purge properly, the fridge can’t light. The result: an error code and no cooling.

It’s a common scenario when you first arrive at camp and switch straight over to gas. Luckily, it doesn’t usually mean anything is “broken” – just that the fridge needs a little help to clear the system and reset.

Step-by-Step: Clearing the Fridge Error

Aaron’s process for fixing this on a Dometic fridge is simple, and it’s one every caravaner can follow:

  1. Check your gas bottles

    • Make sure the bottles are turned on.

    • Double-check that they’re full.

  2. Purge the air from the lines

    • Light your stove top.

    • Run it until you’ve got a steady, clean flame (no spluttering).

    • This ensures all air has cleared, and gas is flowing properly.

  3. Reset the fridge error code

    • Press and hold the fridge’s central button for about 3 seconds.

    • Listen for an audible beep, then release.

    • This triggers the fridge to retry ignition.

  4. Wait and listen

    • You’ll hear the igniter ticking away as the fridge tries to light.

    • It will attempt this three times. If successful, the error clears and your fridge will stay running on gas.

    • If it fails three times in a row, it will go back into shut-off mode.

Most of the time, after purging and resetting, your fridge will light up and run perfectly.

Auto vs Manual Mode

This “gas shut-off” error isn’t limited to one setting. It can happen whether your fridge is running in auto mode or manual gas mode. Don’t stress – the same steps above apply in both situations.

The Petrol Pump Symbol Explained

Have you ever noticed a little petrol pump symbol on your fridge display after you’ve pulled over during a trip?

This isn’t actually a fault. It’s a safety feature built into all Dometic fridges. Here’s what’s happening:

  • When you switch off your car ignition, the fridge goes into lockout mode.

  • It won’t attempt to light on gas for about 15 minutes.

  • This is to prevent the fridge from sparking near fuel vapours if you’re stopped at a service station.

After the 15-minute wait, the fridge will automatically retry gas ignition if you’re still parked. If you’ve already driven off, it’ll switch back to 12V power from your tow vehicle.

So if you see the petrol pump icon, don’t panic – it’s just the fridge looking out for you.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you’ve:

  • Checked your bottles

  • Purged the lines

  • Reset the fridge

…and your fridge still won’t light, there may be something else going on. Common culprits include:

  • Debris in the gas line blocking ignition

  • A fault within the fridge unit itself

In these cases, it’s best not to keep guessing. Book your caravan in with an approved repairer (like our team at Adelaide RV) to get the system properly inspected.

Final Thoughts
