A Complete Pre-Departure Checklist for Stress-Free Travel
There’s nothing worse than arriving at your destination only to discover your fridge isn’t cold, your hot water won’t work, or your gas bottle is empty. Spending just a few minutes checking your caravan before you leave can help prevent unnecessary delays, expensive repairs, and disruptions to your holiday.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a long lap around Australia, completing a few simple safety and maintenance checks before every trip will help ensure your caravan is road-ready.
Here’s everything you should check before hitching up and heading off.
1. Connect Your Caravan to 240V Power
One of the first things you should do before any trip is plug your caravan into 240V power if possible.
Doing this allows you to:
· Fully charge your batteries.
· Pre-cool your fridge.
· Confirm your electrical systems are working correctly.
If your caravan has a 3-way fridge, running it on 240V before you leave means it’ll already be cold when it’s time to load your food.
For caravans with compressor fridges, plugging into mains power also ensures your batteries are fully charged before departure.
2. Inspect Your Caravan Tyres
Your tyres are one of the most important safety components on your caravan.
Before every trip, take a few minutes to:
· Check tyre tread for uneven wear.
· Look for cracks or damage.
· Inflate tyres to the correct pressure.
· Inspect your spare tyre.
For many off-road caravan tyres, around 50 PSI is a common starting point, although this should always be adjusted based on your caravan’s weight and the terrain you’ll be travelling on.
3. Check Wheel Nut Tightness
Loose wheel nuts can quickly become a serious safety issue.
If you have access to a torque wrench, wheel nuts should be tightened to your manufacturer’s recommended specification. At Adelaide RV, wheel nuts are torqued to 135 Nm during servicing.
If you don’t own a torque wrench, simply checking that each wheel nut feels firm before travelling is still worthwhile.
If you’ve recently removed a wheel, always tighten the nuts in a star pattern to ensure even pressure across the wheel.
4. Test Your Breakaway Battery
Your breakaway system is a legal safety requirement and should be tested before every trip.
Depending on your caravan, the breakaway battery may be located:
· Under the bed.
· Inside a cupboard.
· Behind an external battery access hatch.
Most modern systems include a simple test button that allows you to confirm the battery is charged and functioning correctly.
You should also test the breakaway switch located on the A-frame by pulling the pin. On most systems you’ll hear an audible alarm and see the caravan brake lights illuminate, confirming the system is working.
5. Check Your Gas Bottles
Running out of gas halfway through a trip is easily avoided.
Before leaving:
· Check both gas bottles are filled.
· Make sure the selected bottle is turned on.
· Confirm all isolation valves are open.
A quick way to estimate how much gas remains is by lifting or gently shaking the bottle. A heavier bottle generally indicates there’s still plenty of gas available.
6. Test Every Appliance
Before heading off, make sure every appliance is operating exactly as it should.
This includes:
· Fridge.
· Stove and cooktop.
· Hot water system.
· Any gas appliances.
If you’re planning to free camp or travel off-grid, it’s especially important to confirm your fridge successfully switches over to gas operation if you have a 3-way model.
Testing everything at home is much easier than troubleshooting at your campsite.
7. Confirm Your Electrical Systems Are Working
Modern caravans include battery management systems that make it easy to monitor power.
Before leaving, check your display to confirm:
· 240V power is connected.
· Solar charging is operating.
· Your vehicle charging system is functioning.
· Batteries are charging correctly.
A quick glance at your monitoring system can identify potential issues before they become problems on the road.
8. Test Your Hot Water Service
Nobody enjoys discovering they don’t have hot water after setting up camp.
Turn your hot water system on before your trip and allow it time to heat.
Then simply test the taps to confirm hot water is flowing correctly.
If your hot water system won’t ignite or fails to heat properly, it’s worth booking your caravan into a service centre before you leave.
