Inside Jeb & Cassie’s Dream Family Caravan Layout: Designing the Ultimate Adventure Van

After helping thousands of Australian families find the perfect caravan over the past decade, Adelaide RV founders Jeb and Cassie Grose are finally building a van of their own.

With plans to spend extended periods travelling Australia with their daughter Stella, documenting the journey and showcasing the caravanning lifestyle firsthand, this isn’t just another caravan build. It’s the culmination of years of experience, lessons learned, and countless conversations with customers about what truly matters when you’re living on the road.

As construction begins on their custom Leader Xpedition caravan, Jeb and Cassie are bringing together everything they’ve learned to create what they believe is their ultimate family caravan layout for long-term Australian travel.

Building the Ultimate Family Caravan Layout for Life on the Road

The foundation of any great caravan is the floorplan, and this family caravan layout has been carefully designed around the realities of travelling with young children. The van will be an altered 21’6 double-door Leader Xpedition – 22-feet long and built using Leader’s new timber-free composite sandwich panel construction. Featuring one-piece walls, roof and floor panels, the build aims to deliver greater strength, durability and weight savings while maintaining the comfort and practicality required for extended travel.

“We’ve spent years helping families choose layouts,” says Jeb. “Now it’s our turn to build something that perfectly suits the way we travel.”

This van will also become a showcase for Leader‘s new composite construction technology, with Adelaide RV using the build as a real-world case study as they take it on the road around Australia.

Why This Family Caravan Layout Works for Young Families

One of the biggest changes to this double-door floorplan is the removal of the rear door commonly found in double-door bunk layouts.

For Jeb and Cassie, safety was a key consideration. With Stella currently two-and-a-half years old, the rear door presented an unnecessary risk. Instead, the space will be converted into an additional wardrobe, providing valuable storage while creating a safer environment for a growing family.

At the front of the van, the queen bed has also been pushed hard against the wall rather than using a traditional island bed design. While it might seem like an unusual choice, it solves several practical challenges. From their personal experience the unused side of an island bed often becomes wasted space or a dumping ground for clothes, shoes and everyday clutter. By positioning the bed against the wall, they’re gaining additional wardrobe storage and creating a safer sleeping arrangement for future children.

With every element of this family caravan layout Jeb and Cassie are trying to keep their real-world experiences in mind rather than simply following traditional caravan design trends.

Creating a Family Caravan Layout Around Real-Life Travel

Perhaps the standout feature of this family caravan layout is the centre ensuite design. Unlike many bunk caravans where the bunks and living area flow directly into one another, the centre ensuite creates a natural separation between parents and children.

With solid sliding doors positioned on either side of the ensuite, Stella can sleep comfortably in the rear bunk area while Jeb and Cassie continue using the kitchen, dining, and lounge space in the evenings. Jeb and Cassie are hoping that this separation will dramatically improve day-to-day living.

“We can have soft lighting and still use the living area without disturbing her,” explains Cassie.

They’ve also removed the traditional L-shaped lounge and replaced it with a straight café-style seating arrangement and an oversized dining table. This provides additional room for working from the road, as well as plenty of additional space for meal prep and dining.

Storage Solutions in a Modern Family Caravan Layout

Storage has been one of the biggest priorities throughout the build process. Like many travelling families, Jeb and Cassie know that organisation can make or break life on the road. That’s why this family caravan layout includes additional wardrobes, larger kitchen drawers and improved storage access throughout the van.

A large front toolbox provides more external storage, while a tunnel boot with access from both sides improves usability when setting up camp. This set-up is unchanged from their previous van.

One particularly clever addition is a dedicated coffee station built into an oversized slide-out pantry. After years of travelling with a coffee machines occupying valuable bench space, the couple wanted a practical solution that kept everyday essentials organised and easily accessible.

Cassie is also exploring the possibility of relocating the washing machine so it can be accessed externally, making laundry easier while reducing clutter inside the van.

Designing a Bright and Functional Family Caravan

While Jeb focused heavily on technical specifications and functionality, Cassie took the lead when it came to styling the interior.

The chosen colour scheme, known as “Amber Light”, combines light timber tones, white cabinetry, herringbone flooring and gold tapware to create a bright, open and welcoming space. For Cassie, natural light was a must-have, so the build features the largest windows possible, helping the van feel more spacious while maintaining a strong connection with the outdoors.

“Even on a gloomy day, being able to see outside makes such a difference,” she says.

Additional styling choices include sturdier timber sliding doors, a mirrored shower door, integrated storage solutions, and carefully selected furnishings designed to make the van feel more like a home than a caravan.

These are a lot of small details to change, but they play a significant role in making this family caravan layout comfortable for Jeb, Cassie, and Stella on long-term trips.

Balancing Weight and Features in an Off-Road Family Caravan

One of the biggest challenges facing modern caravan buyers is balancing comfort with weight. For Jeb and Cassie, keeping the van under a three-tonne tare weight is a priority to ensure it remains compatible with their Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series, meaning every feature must justify its inclusion.

While it’s tempting to continue adding upgrades, they have already made several decisions to remove items to both save on weight and to customise the van. This includes the electric awning, the oven, and potentially deleting the optional external drawer fridge.

“It’s easy to keep adding features,” says Jeb. “But every extra kilogram counts.”

The reality is that the best family caravan layout isn’t necessarily the one with the most features – it’s the one that delivers the right balance of comfort, practicality and towability.

Taking Adelaide RV’s Family Caravan Layout Across Australia

This build represents more than just a new caravan. For the first time, Jeb and Cassie will spend extended periods travelling Australia while continuing to lead Adelaide RV remotely.

Supported by a strong leadership team and proven systems, they’ll be taking Adelaide RV’s message far beyond South Australia and into caravan parks, events and destinations across the country. And along the way they’ll be sharing the highs, lows, and lessons learned from living the caravan lifestyle full-time. Most importantly, they’ll be bringing the Adelaide RV community along for the journey.

This Xpedition with its custom family caravan layout is the result of years of industry experience, thousands of customer conversations and a genuine passion for helping Australians create unforgettable memories on the road.

And as delivery day approaches, one thing is certain: the adventure is only just beginning.
